Series Review: Out of Uniform Series by Annabeth Albert (2017)

Heat Factor: It’s pretty sexy. Except for the book with the demisexual protagonist, which is a slower burn, these guys have a lot of sex. Some of it is kinky funtimes, too.

Character Chemistry: The chemistry between the protagonists largely worked for me (I mean, I binged this series HARD, so something was working)

Plot: Navy SEALs navigate queer love in a macho-type workplace while dealing with work-related hurdles and personal dramas

Overall: I’m not always one for the military romance (though more me than Holly or Ingrid), but this series totally did it for me.

Series Review: Hidden Sins by Katee Robert (2017)

Heat Factor: It’s more focused on the crime drama than on the sexy sex

Character Chemistry: “I’m attracted to you and also we’re going through some intense things.”

Plot: Murder most foul! (Why else would the BAU be in a small town romancing the locals?)

Overall: Pretty satisfying romantic suspense

Series Review: The Princess Shanyin Saga by Liliana Lee (2014)

Heat Factor: These books go on the Erotica shelf

Character Chemistry: There’s a cosmic connection, but I don’t always buy it

Plot: Princess Shanyin gets a hot young lord sent to her harem. Power plays (and lots of sex) ensue

Overall: If you’re looking for high-brow reverse-harem erotica with bonus disturbing political machinations set in 5th century China, The Obsession is excellent. If you want the HEA, read the full series—but note that The Enslavement and The Fulfillment are less tightly written.

Series Review: Calvin’s Coffee and Donuts by Layla King (2019)

Heat Factor: It’s not hot–closed door and very tepid.

Character Chemistry: Some are a little more zingy than others, but for the most part there’s not a lot of ka-zam going on here.

Plot: At Calvin’s Coffee Shop, we meet a group of employees who all end up finding their true loves during the course of the winter season.

Overall: Honestly, I’m usually the queen of low-drama, easy-on-the-bedroom-scenes type smut but this series dragged a bit too much for me.

Review: Magdalene Series by Kristen Ashley (2014)

Heat Factor: There is so much sex that even people who prefer high heat books might think there’s a lot of sex

Character Chemistry: It’s that sort of mellow, adult clicking together that might involve struggle but not much drama

Plot: Wealthy woman in her 40s winds up romantically involved with a more working-class hero in small town Maine, which irks the obnoxious wealthy man who can’t deal gracefully with not getting the girl

Overall: For readers who enjoy stories with older protagonists, lotsa sex, and a relaxed, meandering story
