Heat Factor: Just when I was beginning to suspect it would be no sex… BAM

Character Chemistry: There was so much going on in the suspense plot, the relationship between the protagonists was relatively superficial

Plot: FBI agent + attractive single mother + serial killer

Overall: I’m not entirely sure how to reconcile my feelings about the first half of the book (chilling serial killer drama) with my feelings about the second half of the book (why are these characters so frustrating?)

My First Smut is a recurring feature where we talk about our formative smut experiences. These short confessionals may include such details as: What book did you read? How old were you? Were there other people involved? What made the experience special? What role does smut play in your life?

This week, romantic suspense author Angela Breen talks about finding smut as a high school student.

First romance novel you read:

Dance with the Devil by Sherrilyn Kenyon

How old were you?

I was fourteen almost fifteen and I’d just started high school. So yeah, I needed the escape. Haha

How’d you get your hands on the book?

My older sister gave it to me. Her husband used to stop by the book store on his way home from work and he found the Dark-Hunter books for us. We were obsessed with Buffy the Vampire Slayer so it was a good choice.

What was the reading experience like?

I’d never read a book faster. To this day, Dance with the Devil is still my favorite. It’s dark, it’s funny, and the romance is out of this world.

What made the experience special?

I don’t think I’ve ever connected with a character more than I did with Astrid. She was struggling to feel anything and as a teen I struggled with depression but the worst were the periods where I couldn’t feel anything. No joy or sadness. I just existed. Reading about a character who was a goddess going through the same thing was a revaluation for me. I wasn’t alone. This author captured it so she must have experienced it. And seeing Astrid get through it through human connection was powerful.

What role does smut play in your life?

It’s my escape. I love hiding in my room and reading a good love story. I like the ones with lots of tension and anticipation. So much so I started writing it as well.

She likes blending those interests with her own writing as well as her podcast, The Fact in the Fiction, (coming Winter 2021). The podcast focuses on how true crimes can inspire stories but each episode highlights a missing person or John, Jane, or Baby Doe in an effort to connect some of them with missing persons cases. The families and victims deserve peace.

When she’s not writing, reading, or podcasting, she’s homeschooling her three children and joking around with her Marine Corps Veteran husband. Laughter is the best medicine.
