Review: Unsuspecting Target by Juno Rushdan (2021)

Hard Core Justice, Book #5

Heat Factor: They both definitely want it (a lot) but when they finally have time to hop in the shower we jump to the next scene.

Character Chemistry: They get over the past really quickly, but that’s because they’re soulmates, obviously

Plot: The cartel has issued a kill order on an innocent woman as a blood debt, and her ex (who has special skills, as one does) rushes back into her life to protect her

Overall: If you want to read an OTT action movie (or show) this is that

Review: It Happened One Summer by Tessa Bailey (2021)

Heat Factor: It’s a slow-but-steady scorcher.

Character Chemistry: Folks…we have a classic Grumpy/Sunshine on our hands!!!

Plot: Piper tries to wrest control of her breakup narrative in a way that lands her in jail…so her wealthy stepfather sends her and her sister to the town they were born in, where they are meant to live in the bar apartment they inherited from their father for three months to SHAPE UP, and there she meets Brendan, the cranky sea captain who stole my heart. I mean, her heart.

Overall: Obsessed. This book was such a solid read, and so enjoyable…

Review: Flirting with Forever by Sara Ohlin (2021)

The Graciella Series, Book #3

Heat Factor: It’s kind of an instant, angry, heated clash and then it burns but in a more friendly and less publicly appropriate way

Character Chemistry: This is absolutely a case of matching wounds meeting matching wounds but it actually made sense to me…THIS TIME.

Plot: Cass is on the tail end of a deeply traumatic experience—so traumatic she loses her sense of smell, and unfortunately she’s a food writer. She regains it when a really attractive farmer accidentally throws manure all over her, and then they get in a really rude argument, and afterwards they pretty much start matching themselves right up in ways that are understandable and steamy.

Overall: This was a really sweet read and it did surprise me in a lot of lovely ways.

Review: Rosaline Palmer Takes the Cake by Alexis Hall (2021)

Winner Bakes All, Book #1

Heat Factor: There’s a decent amount of mediocre sex, and then some spectacular sex.

Character Chemistry: Well…it’s complicated.

Plot: Love at the Great British Bake Off!!!!! (Obviously Alexis Hall is not looking for a lawsuit, so the name was changed and it’s not in a tent.)

Overall: I was feeling a bit anxious about where this was going in the first chunk of the book, but ended up loving it.

Review: Magdalene Series by Kristen Ashley (2014)

Heat Factor: There is so much sex that even people who prefer high heat books might think there’s a lot of sex

Character Chemistry: It’s that sort of mellow, adult clicking together that might involve struggle but not much drama

Plot: Wealthy woman in her 40s winds up romantically involved with a more working-class hero in small town Maine, which irks the obnoxious wealthy man who can’t deal gracefully with not getting the girl

Overall: For readers who enjoy stories with older protagonists, lotsa sex, and a relaxed, meandering story
