Review: Enemies with Benefits by J.D. Hollyfield (2022)

Heat Factor: It’s pretty steamy. There’s a lot of hate whoopie before there’s any tender whoopie, if you’re into that kind of thing. (If you’re not sure…give it a go with this book.)

Character Chemistry: The layers of emotional complexity, backstory, and personal development make these characters and their fiery chemistry very, very satisfying.

Plot: Makayla moves home to clean up and sell her estranged, abusive father’s house–and immediately runs into Ben at a wedding. The two get stuck one upping each other in petty pranks and comebacks, all while they inexplicably find themselves supporting one another from an unknown danger.

Overall: This book is utterly bonkers. It’s got some incredibly witty snark, caustic pranks, emotional character development, and a murderous mystery.

Review: House on Fire by Jenn Burke (2021)

Ashes & Dust, Book #2

Review of Ashes and Dust, Book #1

Heat Factor: they have sex often in this book – not penetrative sex – but it’s not especially lengthy or detailed

Character Chemistry: Evan is just so soft and Colin is just so in turmoil.

Plot: Mysterious bad guy tries to out paranormal community / the Vampire King’s brother gets in the way / Colin’s past joins his present / and also there’s some relationship development in there, too

Overall: Ah, book two of a trilogy: the darkest, cliffhangery-est one

Review: All Fired Up by Jenn Burke (2021)

Ashes & Dust, Book #1

Heat Factor: Dry humping to climax is great, but have you ever tried a “whoops we woke up in the same bed and we’re aroused” hand job?

Character Chemistry: It was sweet

Plot: Someone is sucking the souls out of people with magic, so of course the vampire PI goes undercover to investigate and then ends up metaphysically bound to the soul-sucker

Overall: It took a long time to figure out what the deal was with the love interest, but the mystery and the magical creatures made for a fun read

Review: Muffin Top by Avery Flynn (2018)

The Hartigans, Book 2

Review of The Hartigans, Book 1

Heat Factor: “Let’s act out our fantasies in the car” kind of hot

Character Chemistry: Insta-clicked…even though they’ve known each other for a while

Plot: Let’s all avoid our emotional baggage until it blows up in our faces

Overall: Hmm

Review: Badass by Carla R. (2020)

Bombshell Series, Book 1

Heat Factor: It’s fairly steamy

Character Chemistry: It’s love-at-first sight, raring to go type thing

Plot: Molly runs a hair salon and is in the middle of a string of terrible dates when she meets Brenden, the new firefighter in town. But Molly’s having some terrifying incidents with a stalker and it’s getting NUTTY…

Overall: This was a solid debut and I was very happy with the suspense.
