Review: Devil in Disguise by Lisa Kleypas (2021)

The Ravenels, Book #7

(a.k.a. The Wallflowers, The Next Generation, Book #3)

(a.k.a. The Devil in Winter Epilogues, also Book #3)

Erin’s reviewed the whole Ravenels series: Book #1 | Book #2 | Book #3 | Book #4 | Book #5 | Book #6

Heat Factor: These are some horny Victorians

Character Chemistry: It’s totally insta-love, and it was written lucidly enough that it worked for me

Plot: “We’ll never work because of an unequal match” + “Why is someone trying to murder me?”

Overall: I re-upped my membership in the Bad Decisions Book Club for this one and read it in one sitting. No regrets.

Review: How to Find a Princess by Alyssa Cole (2021)

Runaway Royals, Book #2

Heat Factor: Low heat

Character Chemistry: Sparkling

Plot: A Royal Investigator who follows the letter of the law but not the spirit + A Long-Lost Princess who has no interest in claiming the throne + A Transatlantic Voyage = Hijinks on the High Seas

Overall: It wrapped up abruptly, leaving me feeling vaguely dissatisfied

Series Review: Leveling Up by K.F. Breene

Heat Factor: I would argue that it’s a somewhat slow burn? The heat simmers for at least the first two books and then it really takes off.

Character Chemistry: Jacinta’s chemistry with all of the odd crew mates she attracts is off the charts. And of course, her chemistry with Austin is immediate and deeply satisfying.

Plot: Jacinta is in her 40’s and divorced after twenty fairly routine years of marriage and child-rearing. With her child off to college and nowhere else to go, she accepts a position at a house she encountered as a child and felt a deep affinity with—only to discover the house is magic and in search of a new keeper.

Overall: This series was INCREDIBLE. So fresh, so funny, so riveting—it’s absolutely nuts.

Review: The Professional by Kresley Cole (2014)

The Game Maker, Book #1

Heat Factor: These two are just so creative

Character Chemistry: It. Is. So. Angsty.

Plot: Natalie is kidnapped from her bath by her heretofore unknown, sexy AF bodyguard and flown to meet her also heretofore unknown Billionaire Russian mobster father. And that’s just the first three chapters.

Overall:

Review: Beauty Tempts the Beast by Lorraine Heath (2020)

Sins for All Seasons, Book #6

Heat Factor: She wears a sexy red corset with black lace for seduction purposes…

Character Chemistry: The fact that it was in no way based on seduction lessons made it perfect

Plot: Ostracized former aristocratic woman accepts proposition of brothel owner (among other things) to teach the prostitutes refinement so they can get new jobs. Also, seduction lessons. Ish.

Overall: Heath is just a really good storyteller. That is all.
