Dueling Review: Dragon’s Instinct by Elva Birch (2022)

Daycare for Shifters, #2

Ingrid’s review of Daycare for Shifters, #1

Holly’s Take

Heat Factor: There’s an epic sexathon without a ton of details

Character Chemistry: “My dragon says that you’re the one!” But also they’re really cute together.

Plot: Single dad dealing with some stuff + neighbor who is really good with kids + the American West is on fire

Overall: A cute read

Ingrid’s Take

Heat Factor: So many puns about fire and heat factor and so little time. They have many encounters and entanglements.

Character Chemistry: It’s a lot of cute, eager yearning and then it’s off to the races.

Plot: Olivia is not a shifter, but she’s hoping to shift gears and start over in a new town. Ian is a single dad with a massively challenging home life going on, and he’s immediately drawn to his new neighbor.

Overall: Very tender and entertaining.

Erin’s Take

Heat Factor: I don’t think I’ve ever read an Elva Birch book with this much descriptive sex. (They go through a whole box of condoms in one weekend!)

Character Chemistry: Is it fated mates or are they just really into each other?

Plot: She’s running from her past, he’s running himself ragged with a shifter toddler, and there are some worrisome things happening around town

Overall: It’s light-hearted and sweet

Review: Wolf’s Instinct: A Day Care for Shifters by Elva Birch (2021)

Heat Factor: It’s not high heat, but it’s certainly sweet.

Character Chemistry: There’s not a ton of tension but it’s certainly an adorable romance.

Plot: Addison is a new resident of small-town Montana and gets a job at a shifter nursery where she meets single-dad Roderick. Roderick is also dealing with the arrival of his daughter’s birth mother, crazy town politics and presumably just being a shifter dad.

Overall: This book was a charming little palate cleanser. Not too tense, not too boring. Just lovely.

Review: A Nordic King by Karina Halle (2018)

Nordic Royals, Book #3

Heat Factor: They like to get into that boss/nanny kink dynamic in the bedroom

Character Chemistry: With the tension of the forbidden in the mix, the chemistry was great

Plot: Nanny with secrets “Mary Poppinses” Danish King’s family, but he has secrets of his own…

Overall: Totally hit the spot

Review: Dragon Dad’s Nanny by Amelia Wilson (2020)

Dragon Dads Love Chronicles, Book #4

Heat Factor: I feel like it’s supposed to be hot but…it’s not

Character Chemistry: is secondary to everything else going on

Plot: Sam, a shifter, feels like he’s a bad dad, so he’s initiated a custody review so his shifter hunter ex-wife can have custody of his dragon twin daughters. (Yep. That’s right.)  Meanwhile, nanny AnnaLee can’t have children.

Overall: This book makes me want to smash the patriarchy (not in a good way)

Review: Hookup State of Mind by Becca Morgan and Amelia J. Rose (2021)

Heat Factor: I would call this one moderately hot (but satisfying!)

Character Chemistry: I loved these two together–kind of salty and sweet, earnest and slightly sarcastic.

Plot: Cleo is an actress slash nanny who is FINALLY getting her shot at a mini series. At the location, she gets a hankering for a hookup and ends up meeting Dean, who is a really genuine and sweet guy she can’t seem to get enough of. BUT THEN they discover that Cleo is actually Dean’s little brother’s nanny, and that throws a big old wrench in things…

Overall: This was enjoyable and funny, although it did pass up on playing out some tension I would have very much liked to see.
