Review: The Naked Moon by Nicole Kelleher (2022)

Heart and Hand, Book #3

Heat Factor: She’s a slowwwww burn folks

Character Chemistry: They’re fated mates, but they spend the majority of the book at odds

Plot: Princess Anwyl is on a quest to bring pijala trees and pihaberries to different lords in order to protect the people from brainwashing. She’s also on a quest to find a husband—but she’s already learned that she’s destined to be with a dark haired man with blue eyes who affects her like no other. Warin is that man, she’s pretty sure; but he acts like he can’t stand her. Plus, a LOT of other stuff.

Overall: This book is an epic quest in a series, and it is LONG and complex.

Dueling (?) Review: Headless by Aveda Vice (2021)

For our final monster smut of October, we’re talking about Headless. This is not so much a duel as a short discussion because (spoiler alert) we all liked it. Definitely recommended if you’re in the mood for some Halloween reading.

Heat Factor: It’s very much about how their sexual relationship keeps them connected, but it’s more evocative than squelching body parts.

Character Chemistry: Big sad feels that they only have their throuple together one night per year!

Plot: After Brom disappears one Halloween, Abe and Katrin spend the rest of their Halloweens awaiting his ghostly return

Overall: I was expecting Headless Horseman throuple sexytimes and this is that but…it’s completely different than I expected

Monster Mash Smashdown: Beauty and the Beast (emphasis on Beast) week

Bitterburn by Ann Aguirre (2020)

Heat Factor: It’s cold in the castle but they make their own fires

Character Chemistry: Gothic with a side of romance

Plot: Beauty and the Beast, but in an ice castle, and the evil witch is still there

Overall: Slow pace, rich writing, creepy atmosphere, unique retelling

His Beauty by Jack Harbon (2020)

Heat Factor: Horny AF

Character Chemistry: Beasts of a feather boink together

Plot: Beauty and the Beast, Disney .0, but with extra graphic violence

Overall: The TSR team is divided on this one

Review: Spellbound by Ophelia Silk (2021)

Heat Factor: Medium-ish heat, tastefully and sweetly done

Character Chemistry: Just so meant to be.

Plot: Two deeply lonely women find themselves thrown together in a deep and scary wood and end up finding themselves (but together)

Overall: This was like a Matryoshka doll of a story–so many details that just kinda stick in your brain and cling in the best way.

Review: The Elementalist by S.N. Hunt (2020)

Journey to Zlorta, Book 1

Heat Factor: There’s a fair amount of fantasy sizzle in here.

Character Chemistry: It was oddly flat, considering the fated mates/whoopie frequency

Plot: Sarah is kidnapped from her home after a foiled assault and brought beyond the Veil, where she learns that she is a key player in an attempted sort of magical coup, only she had no idea magic even existed.

Overall: This had so much potential but it just wasn’t fully formed.

*TW – attempted sexual assault.
