Review: Out of the Ashes by Jenn Burke (2022)

Ashes & Dust, Book #3

Review of Ashes & Dust, Book #1 and Book #2

Heat Factor: They do have sex, but the story is focused on the mystery first and the repair of their relationship second, plus other stuff, so sex might not even be in third place in the plot agenda

Character Chemistry: They really get to choose each other this time

Plot: Left with an amnesiac boyfriend who intentionally severed their bond, Evan grapples with his changing relationship at the same time as people are somehow still trying to murder paranormals all over Toronto. Plus there’s a demon on the loose again.

Overall: What a lovely end to this series. I’m all heart eyes.

Review: Blood of the Land by Adrik Kemp (2016)

Heat Factor: There’s a lot of sex. It’s graphic. And most of it isn’t between the protagonists.

Character Chemistry: So, the book isn’t actually focused on Mack and Jason’s relationship as such

Plot: Sociopath vampires wreak havoc on a ranch in colonial Australia. And then it’s the 90s.

Overall: WUT

Review: House on Fire by Jenn Burke (2021)

Ashes & Dust, Book #2

Review of Ashes and Dust, Book #1

Heat Factor: they have sex often in this book – not penetrative sex – but it’s not especially lengthy or detailed

Character Chemistry: Evan is just so soft and Colin is just so in turmoil.

Plot: Mysterious bad guy tries to out paranormal community / the Vampire King’s brother gets in the way / Colin’s past joins his present / and also there’s some relationship development in there, too

Overall: Ah, book two of a trilogy: the darkest, cliffhangery-est one

Review: Night’s Illusion by Amanda Ashley (2021)

Children of the Night, Book #8

Heat Factor: Purple prose fading to black

Character Chemistry: Well…

Plot: There’s a meddling vampire family and a vengeful sire and just a lot

Overall: It’s not tightly written

Review: Archangel’s Enigma by Nalini Singh (2015)

Guild Hunter, Book #8

Heat Factor: This one’s a slow burn, but there is much discussion of “rutting” along the way

Character Chemistry: Naasir is looking for a mate to play secret games with and it turns out The Scholar wears two skins just like him

Plot: Naasir and Andromeda have to find the sleeping ancient Alexander before Archangel of Death Lijuan can find and kill him

Overall: This book is a ride and I enjoyed all of it.
