Review: Night Hawk by Beverly Jenkins (2011)

Heat Factor: They definitely like the sexytimes, even if they don’t do it all the time

Character Chemistry: I was going to say he’s a tall drink of water and she’s a firecracker, but those metaphors don’t mix well. So. How about: he’s a bottle of Diet Coke, and she’s a Mento

Plot: Maggie got arrested and wound up in a reluctant Ian’s custody, but when he finally manages to leave her, he realizes he really doesn’t want to

Overall: Just when I thought things were slowing down, a new adventure cropped up

Character Chemistry: OMGGGGG, he’s so hot (and he has a great personality, too)

Overall: This was a very chill read

Review: The Shutout by Dianna Roman (2022)

Heat Factor: They have a lot of sex. And it’s good sex.

Character Chemistry: Really awesome friends to lovers energy.

Plot: Closeted baseball player kisses his widowed best friend, kicking off a series of events that leads to Max’s bi-awakening and Jack’s outing.

Overall: This had a great skeleton (see above). I’m really sad that it apparently didn’t also have a sensitivity read because it also had a lot of problematic content.

Review: Sea Change by Jessica Marting (2021)

Magic & Mechanicals, Book #2

Heat Factor: Not as cold as the North Atlantic waters Calla likes swimming in, but not high heat by any means

Character Chemistry: She gets all shivery when he touches her scales

Plot: Writer and mermaid hang out in a maybe-haunted house with very rude neighbors

Overall: This book feels very “social justice-y”
